Receiving a GST notice can be alarming — but most can be resolved efficiently with the right approach and timely action.
Common Types of GST Notices
ASMT-10: Scrutiny notice seeking clarification on discrepancies in your GST returns.
DRC-01: Demand notice for unpaid GST, interest, or penalty.
DRC-01A: Pre-notice for demand — you have an opportunity to respond before a formal demand is raised.
Step 1: Read Carefully, Don't Ignore
Notice deadlines are strict. Missing a response window can result in ex-parte orders, which are harder and costlier to contest. Forward the notice to your tax advisor immediately.
Step 2: Identify the Allegation
Most notices flag: (a) mismatch between GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B, (b) ITC claimed vs. GSTR-2A/2B mismatch, or (c) turnover discrepancies. Each has a specific remedy.
Step 3: Gather Your Evidence
Collect invoices, e-way bills, payment proofs, and bank statements corresponding to the period under scrutiny. A well-documented response is always more successful.
Step 4: Draft a Precise Reply
Avoid generic replies. Every assertion in the notice must be addressed with specific facts and documents.
Important: If the demand involves a large amount or allegations of suppression, engage professional legal representation before responding.
